Has it truly been 2 months since I last posted...? [Jul. 23rd, 2009|04:59 pm]
A lot has happened. Vacations, visiting with family, all kinds of fun stuff. Scott and I had our 4th anniversary of the day we met this past Wednesday. My computer got a virus, had the CPU fan go out, and keyboard break all in the span of 2 days...

So, a lot of stuff, some fun and some not so fun...all in the last 2 months. :)

Thank you all. [May. 4th, 2009|06:05 pm]
Instead of replying one on one, I figured I'd do it here. Thank you all for your advice and support. I have already let her know that what she did is called assault and battery (she came home from her Aunt's house yesterday) and that she can go to jail for it. I've also let her know that I find her threatening to kill another person unacceptable and if it happens again she will be arrested as I will call the police.

I have already called the counseling agency her doctor referred us to on Thursday before this blow up, but they can't see her until May 20th, they said. I have filled out their forms and will be faxing them over tomorrow with a note on the cover page of the fax stating that she is having violent thoughts and already threatened someone's life and see if they can get her in sooner.

Keep us in your thoughts and prayers.

The joys of parenting [May. 3rd, 2009|02:13 pm]
My 15 year old is at it again. Thursday night her dog (the puppy we recently *had* to get her because she was going through some trauma and insisted only a puppy would solve the pain and anguish inside) bit one of the neighbors.

This "puppy" is an 18 month old rottweiler mix (looks to be mixed with some sort of collie) and stands taller than my knees. The front fence is only about 2 feet tall (maybe slightly taller) and he jumped up on it with his paws and reached over the fence and bit the neighbor. Luckily they are not suing us so we aren't going to lose the house, the cars, and everything else. They also didn't report it to animal control, so the dog isn't going to be put to sleep. We just aren't sure yet what we're going to do about him.

She hasn't taken any responsibility for him. She doesn't walk, except maybe if she wants something and is told she's not going to get it unless she walks him. She doesn't try to train him. She says she doesn't know what to do with him because he's so bad, but doesn't take the time necessary to train him good behavior and correct the bad.

So, anyway, Scott went out to yell at the dog and put some fear of something into him. He was out there while d2 and I were in the house. We heard this loud thump, then a yelp. This happened three times and we both were like, "What the heck?" We went hurrying through the house to the back door (we'd locked the dog in the backyard at that point so he couldn't bite anyone else). When we got to the back door, she was behind me and I opened the door and both she and I said, "What are you doing to the dog". Scott said, "I didn't do anything to the dog." She went ballistic.

She shoved past me and acted as if she were going to hit him. He caught her by the wrists and tried to hold her back. She kept shoving and clawing and trying to get at him. They were screaming at each other and I was trying to get them to stop and calm down so we could find out what happened. Finally he lets her go after I get between them and she backs off a little, but keeps screaming at him.

She then tells him he needs to leave, he doesn't belong there in her house and he's got to go. He says, "What do you do around here to make this your house?" She looks at me and screams, "Mom, he's got to go. You have to make him leave. Or else." I said, "He's got a point, what do you do around here that makes this your house?"

She ran to the kitchen and grabbed a knife and started screaming that she was going to kill him and stab him in his sleep and he couldn't stop her. I kept telling her to put down the knife and calm down so we can talk. She ran to her room.

I followed her and kept telling her to put down the knife. She told me she was leaving. We argued back and forth, althoug without screaming, and she finally threw the knife in her closet and shoved past me then ran out the door and took off.

It took almost 2 hours to find her. She refused to get in the car. I had called her dad's sister to see if she'd called her and she hadn't. He Aunt offered to come get her and she agreed to that. I haven't seen her since Thursday night and she refuses to talk to me.

She has posted on her Facebook page that I have to choose - either her or him.

None of my children have ever acted like this. I'm not sure what to do. Thus far all I've done is tell her on Facebook that I love her. I had ignored her ultimatum to choose between them until today when I posted that I choose her, and everyone I love.

If only I had King Solomon's wisdom.

I know this child needs professional help. Her sister found a journal in her room that says she's been feeling violent and having violent thoughts for some time now, so it's not just something that suddenly happened. She's simply blaming Scott for her actions. Even if Scott and I agreed for him to move out for a while, without us breaking up, she would still have these behavior issues. His leaving won't solve that.

I just don't know what to do to help her other than getting her therapy. I don't want to lose my child that I love, but I also will not let her dictate how I live my life.

New Grandbaby [Jan. 24th, 2009|09:10 pm]
Yesterday at 4:45pm my first grandbaby was born. We had been at the hospital all night. I came home and crashed out last night, then got up and immediately went to the hospital again to spend the day with my daughter and grandbaby. She's so pretty and precious. Sophie Rae Smith weighed in at 6 lbs 14 oz and is 19 inches long.

Here's the pretty girl )

Update [Dec. 21st, 2008|09:26 am]
All of the sweet potato pies are done. The raisin (funeral) pie is done. They are all wrapped in foil and sitting in the garage awaiting the arrival of company and Christmas.

I am finishing up my coffee and then I will be off to start cleaning/straightening up the house again. Later we'll be off to the grocery store(s) to finish up holiday food shopping.

I think next year someone else will be doing Christmas. This is my second year in a row and it's exhausting.

Today is S1's birthday. It seems like yesterday he was just a baby...time flies so quickly.

Christmas Preparations [Dec. 20th, 2008|06:16 pm]
I have three sweet potato pies finished baking, two in the oven, one apple/raisin/cranberry pie completly baked too.

We got the kitchen mostly clean. I'm saving mopping the floor until we are done baking and stuff.

The living room just needs a few odds and ends picked up and vacuumed (it'll need vacuumed again on Wednesday, but that's fine.

D2 is working on getting her room clean enough for people other than herself to sleep in. I'm proud of the hard work she's doing.

Scott dusted the living room and hallway (including picture frames).

There's not a lot to do still, but it seems like there's a lot just because there's still 3 rooms to clean up, vacuum, sweep, mop, etc.

Holiday Eating Tips [Dec. 19th, 2008|09:15 am]
1. Avoid carrot sticks. Anyone who puts carrots on a holiday buffet table knows nothing of the Christmas spirit. In fact, if you see carrots, leave immediately. Go next door, where they're serving rum balls.

2. Drink as much eggnog as you can. And quickly. Like fine single-malt scotch, it's rare. In fact, it's even rarer than single-malt scotch. You can't find it any other time of year but now. So drink up! Who cares that it has 10,000 calories in every sip? It's not as if you're going to turn into an eggnog-aholic or something. It's a treat. Enjoy it. Have one for me. Have two. It's later than you think. It's Christmas!

3. If something comes with gravy, use it. That's the whole point of gravy. Gravy does not stand alone. Pour it on. Make a volcano out of your mashed potatoes. Fill it with gravy. Eat the volcano. Repeat.

4. As for mashed potatoes, always ask if they're made with skim milk or whole milk. If it's skim, pass. Why bother? It's like buying a sports car with an automatic transmission.

5. Do not have a snack before going to a party in an effort to control your eating. The whole point of going to a Christmas party is to eat other people's food for free. Lots of it. Hello?

6. Under no circumstances should you exercise between now and New Year's. You can do that in January when you have nothing else to do. This is the time for long naps, which you'll need after circling the buffet table while carrying a 10-pound plate of food and that vat of eggnog.

7. If you come across something really good at a buffet table, like frosted Christmas cookies in the shape and size of Santa, position yourself near them and don't budge. Have as many as you can before becoming the center of attention. They're like a beautiful pair of shoes. If you leave them behind, you're never going to see them again.

8. Same for pies. Apple. Pumpkin. Mincemeat. Have a slice of each. Or, if you don't like mincemeat, have two apples and one pumpkin. Always have three. When else do you
get to have more than one dessert? Labor Day?

9. Did someone mention fruitcake? Granted, it's loaded with the mandatory celebratory calories, but avoid it at all cost. I mean, have some standards.

10. One final tip: If you don't feel terrible when you leave the party or get up from the table, you haven't been paying attention.

Reread tips; start over, but hurry, January is just around the corner.

Remember this motto to live by: "Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, martini in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO HOO what a ride!"

Merry Christmas to you all, eat well!

Pies [Dec. 14th, 2008|07:30 pm]
The sweet potato pies are in the oven. This is my first time ever making them so I have no idea how they are going to turn out, but they smell delicious. I only bought enough pie shells to make two, but had enough stuff I could have made 3. I will know next time.

These are made from fresh sweet potatos that were cooked in the oven before blending. They smelled good before I even started making the pie filling.

I am not going to get the apple or raisin pies started tonight. I'll do that later this week. I can't wait until next weekend because we have some SCA stuff going on next weekend.

Catching Up... [Dec. 14th, 2008|10:51 am]
I realized I never posted anything about Thanksgiving and have only really posted birthday wishes. So here is the catching up post...

THANKSGIVING:
Scott, D2, and I got up early on Wednesday morning, since we got the day off of work, and drove six hours to my Aunt Roseanna and Uncle Sam's (yes, I have an Uncle Sam - no snickering) house in Pueblo, CO. Halfway there, we met up with my mom, dad, and grandma at a gas station in Colorado. They take a different route than we do to get over the mountains in Southern Colorado/Northern New Mexico. We get to take I-25 the entire way, they had to take a state route, then meet up with I-25.

We were the first of the family to arrive at my Aunt and Uncle's house. Their kids live in Pueblo too. Their oldest son is married and has two children. Their youngest son is not married, but has one child.

So we hang out watching tv, chit chatting and what have you till my Aunt Dorothy (again, no snickering) and Uncle Scott arrive from Wichita, Kansas (NOW you can snicker).

The sleeping arrangements in the 3 bedroom (with one bedroom turned into a pool room) house are going to get complicated with the expectation of the arrival of Dorothy and Scott's two children and two grandchildren...

So, mom and dad are sleeping upstairs, grandma is sleeping in Sam and Rose's bed, Sam and Rose are sleeping on the pull out couch. Scott, D2, and I are sleeping in the camper. Scott and Dorothy and their children all got hotel rooms in different hotels. Gotta love family...

Sometime in the night my cousins from Kansas (Scott and Dorothy's children and grandchildren) arrived. The next morning we all met up at Sam and Rose's to prepare our portion of the holiday meal. We then hauled all the food over to Tim (R & S' oldest son) and Amy's house to eat. We played card and board games for hours. The guys watched football from time to time while we played games. Then we watched a movie while playing games.

The kids played pool or video games. I felt sorry for D2 though. She was the oldest of the kids. The next oldest was 8 (one boy and one girl), and then two four year olds. She mainly got to play babysitter, but they had a nintendo she got to play. The Wii was in the living room and Amy didn't want the kids playing in there since that's where all we adults were.

The next day, black Friday, half the family got up and drove north to Colorado Springs (1 hour drive) and up to where an old narrow gauge train run on coal takes you up to "The North Pole" and "Santa's Workshop". Some of the family stayed home, and Scott and I went shopping. We didn't get up at 5 am though. We weren't that insane.

We had a list of things we wanted to get and figured if they were there, we'd get them and if they weren't, we'd find something else. Every store had exactly what we were looking for except Sears. The saw my mom wanted to get my dad was sold out. So we got a different one that was still on sale, but $50 more - after her approval, of course. The stores weren't bad, except for Kohl's. I sat in the car while Scott ran into Kohl's. Glad I did. He was in line for 45 minutes. I would have been a bit pissy if I'd had to stand there that long.

We got back to the house and immediately started playing board games with those who were still home (after eating some good lunch).

Saturday my brother, his wife, and their child showed up. I say their child because he has two children from his first wife too, but they did not come to visit for Thanksgiving.

This is the first time in over 10 years my brother spent a holiday with the family, that's why this is significant to note. :) It was really great to see him. We played Apples to Apples with them for a while since they brought it for us to play. Scott, D2 and I had to leave to get back home (and beat the snow over the pass).

My brother stated that they are going to come for Christmas. Since we are having Christmas at our house this year it's going to be packed. It's going to be fun too!

CHRISTMAS PREPARATION:
All of my children will be home since Son 1 is getting leave for Christmas. He and his wife will be here, S2, D1 and D2 will be here, my mom, dad, and grandmother and my brother, his wife, and all three of his kids, plus Scott and myself.

I am going to have to borrow chairs, but we have two long folding tables we can setup for all of us to eat at (and a slightly large kitchen). I've thought of a way to serve the food on the counters by buying those large plastic cutting boards (I need new cutting boards anyway) and putting them over the sinks. I just don't have a lot of counter space, but if we do it that way, we can put some of the dishes on the cutting boards as they'll now be counter space. :)

I am going to make an apple/raisin/cranberry pie, a raisin pie (funeral pie), and a sweet potato pie today. We are going to have ham and some surprise my mom has (I'm thinking duck) because she told me not to get a turkey, green bean casserole, corn casserole, fruit salad, green salad, veggie tray, scalloped potatoes, yams (with brown sugar and marshmallows), and cranberry sauce. If anyone wants any recipes for any of the above, I'll post them on the LT Recipes journal, just ask. :)

Last week we put up the Christmas tree and I got all the presents we had purchased wrapped and put under the tree. Yesterday we finished up our Christmas shopping and got the presents that need to go to Ohio shipped. I have 4 more gifts I am waiting on arrival since I purchased them online and I will get those wrapped and under the tree and that will be done. We still haven't put up Christmas lights outside and I'm not sure if we will get them up this year or not.

We also still have to get the plastic put up over the windows. We've been slacking. We had planned on doing it today, but it's snowing outside. This means the window casing will be too cold for the tape to stick to and the plastic will just fall down. Yesterday it was almost 60 degrees, we should have done it then, but we'd been out running around all day and wanted to relax when we finally got home about 4pm.

When I get done posting this it will be time to head to the grocery store, dollar store, and Walgreens. Then we will come home and I will bake and try to play Star Wars Galaxies while the pies bake since I won't be putting plastic on the windows.

Anyway, I guess I'll be off to brave the grocery store. Wish me luck!
